Harvard Stem Cell Institute
The Harvard community, consisting of the university, medical school and 11 teaching hospitals and research institutions, already represents one of the largest concentrations of biomedical researchers in the world. But stem cell research is a challenge that involves areas of expertise not encompassed in any one discipline, department or school. Most importantly, basic biology must interface with medical expertise if the promise of this field is to be fully realized. The Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) was founded in 2004 to draw Harvard's resources together by establishing a cooperative community of scientists and practitioners, by developing new ways to fund and support research, and by promoting opportunities for open communication and education. Initiative on Innovative Computing
The Initiative in Innovative Computing (IIC) fosters the creative use of computational resources to address issues at the forefront of data-intensive science. Focusing on interdisciplinary collaborations that span traditional academic boundaries, the IIC fosters the flow of ideas and inventions along the continuum from basic science to scientific computation to computational science to computer science. Microbial Sciences Initiative
The Microbial Sciences Initiative (MSI) at Harvard is an interdisciplinary science program aimed at a comprehensive understanding of the richest biological reservoir of the planet, the microbial world. The recent realizations of the vastness of microbial diversity and the genomics revolution have propelled the microbial sciences into an exciting new era of investigation. MSI is playing a leadership role in this emerging area by creating an organizational focal point for microbial studies with strong links to already existing science departments at Harvard. MSI encourages broad interactions among microbial scientists across the Boston area and also connects work on microbial sciences to ongoing work in related areas including molecular biology, biogeochemistry, oceanography, and environmental engineering. Mind Brain Behavior Interfaculty Initiative
The Mind/Brain/Behavior Interfaculty Initiative (MBB) is an interdisciplinary community of investigators whose research aims to elucidate the structure, function, evolution, development, and pathology of the nervous system in relation to human behavior and mental life. The MBB community draws broadly from all the schools of the University to bring together scholars - from undergraduates to faculty - with a common commitment both to empirical research and to multidisciplinary dialogue. Origins of Life
The Harvard University Origins of Life Initiative envisions the creation of an interdisciplinary center unlike any other in the world. It will study everything from planet formation and detection to the origin and early evolution of life. The center will also form a natural bridge between the physical and the life sciences and would become a focus for integrative undergraduate science education at Harvard. Read more
